Course overview
The physical intervention programme provides candidates with a wider range of non-violent options for dealing with the most common scenarios involving physical contact. It does not offer a technique to cover every possible situation, but provides a solid foundation in terms of knowledge and skills to further reduce risk to customers and staff.

Who should attend?
The most significant area of need and opportunity lies with those personnel performing licensable security functions. However, the programme could also cover wider needs within licensed retail environments, for example, providing an option of lower level disengagement skills for those in non-security roles such as licensees and other frontline staff.
Course contents
The programme comprises two modules:
Assessment information
Students are assessed on physical intervention skills throughout the course by instructor observation.
- Module 1: Disengagement (defensive) skills. The module addresses how learners can protect themselves and others from assault and includes relevant aspects of law, medical implications and safe practice. Disengagement may be sufficient for some individuals in non-security functions.
- Module 2: Escort and holding skills. This module addresses restrictive holds and focuses on teaching safer skills for common holding activities such as during ejection. The focus is on standing holds and escorts but the programme raises awareness of the risk associated with restraint in different positions. Training in holding skills will incorporate disengagement.

Level 2 Award for Up-skilling Door Supervisors

Course Duration 2 Day (plus pre-course study)
Who should attend?
This award is for all existing door supervisors who have previously achieved a door supervision qualification prior to summer 2010, e.g. National Certificate for Door Supervision, and need to undertake additional top up training in order to renew their SIA licence.
Course overview
The Level 2 Award for Up-skilling Door Supervisors is a qualification that has been developed to meet the mandatory SIA top up training requirement for Door Supervisors who undertook their training prior to June 2010. The qualification meets the SIA’s mandatory top-up requirements and appropriately qualified learners who complete the qualification will be eligible to apply to renew their SIA Door Supervisors licence.
The qualifications consist of two units:
1. Safety awareness for door supervisors
- A knowledge unit covering counter terrorism issues, first aid situations and requirements regarding children and young people – 2 guided learning hours
2. Physical Intervention Skills for the Private Security Industry
- The principles of physical intervention skills appropriate to their role
- The legal and professional implications of using physical intervention skills
- How to reduce the risk of harm
- Using non-aggressive physical skills
- Good practices to follow after physical intervention skills are used
Assessment criteria
Safety awareness for door supervisors is assessed by an externally set and marked multiple-choice question paper consisting of 10 questions. The examination will last for 20 minutes and attendees will be required to correctly answer 7 of the 10 questions (70%).
Physical intervention skills for the private security industry is assessed through observation and questioning.

Key Holding and Alarm Response

Course overview
This is a two day course which will provide the necessary skills and techniques for Key holding and alarm response roles. It will provide you with the necessary skills to work in key holding & alarm response environments which comply with BS7984:2008, and also meets the SIA Approved Contractor status.
Course duration
2 days (16 hours).
Who should attend?
Anyone who wants to work in the security industry specifically in the area of mobile patrols, alarm response and key holding. This course ensures that all key holding and alarm response staff complete 16 hours of formal classroom training, as required by the BS 7984:2008 standard. This course also meets the audit conditions for those wishing to update their skills and remain ACS compliant.
Course contents
Course contents The course covers four modules, which have been designed to be delivered in their entirety as a two day course or individually to form part of an in-house/bespoke training programme.
The four modules are:
- Procedures, guidelines and reporting
- Communication skills and conflict management
- Dealing with incidents
- Alarm systems and access control
Assessment information
Assessment is made at the end of the course via a multiple-choice examination.
