Under the Licensing Act 2003 anyone authorising the retail sale of alcohol must hold a personal license. The Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH) meets the criteria which allow the holder to apply for a personal license. This replaces the Level 2 National Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (NCPLH) from the 01/04/11. The course enables candidates to retail alcohol within the law, in a socially responsible manner and acts as a safeguard for their licence and their business.

Unit 1: Responsible Alcohol Retailing (half-day) - BIIAB has developed the BIIAB Level 1 ARAR in response to industry-wide training requirements to demonstrate commitment to responsible alcohol retailing. This qualification provides essential knowledge and understanding of the responsibilities of alcohol retailers authorised by a personal license holder to sell alcohol. It will enable those who complete the qualification to act within the law to support the designated premises supervisor to retail alcohol responsibly on their licensed premises.
Unit 2: The Customer and Drinks Service Unit (half-day) is part of the Professional Barperson's Qualification - a national qualification for persons working in licensed premises in England and Wales. As a result of obtaining this unit, bar staff will be able to identify the basic service standards they must meet when working in licensed premises. The Customer and Drinks Service unit is designed for bar staff, as an introduction to the skills they will need to work professionally in the bar.

The BIIAB Level 1 ARAR is designed for anyone who works on licensed retail premises who is, or likely to be, involved in the sale of alcohol including:

On successful completion of this qualification, candidates will be able to demonstrate an understanding of: Preparing the bar for service procedures, clearing, cleaning and closing, maintaining customer care, maintaining working relationships, selling skills payment and security. As a result of obtaining this unit, bar staff will be able to identify the basic service standards they must meet when working in licensed premises.
Assessment information
Candidates are required to complete a multiple choice exam consisting of 40 questions a pass rate of 28 or more has been set.
